[28.06.2007] With summer just starting the weather has been warm enough I thought it would be a good time to give the Mount Evans Scenic Byway a try. The byway is the highest paved highway in North America. The mountain is 14,264 feet (4350 m) with the road taking the visitor to the 14,130 foot (4307 m) level. The last little gain in elevation must be done on foot. Near the top is also located the University of Denver Meyer-Wo [more]

[10.06.2007] A rare bird indeed is the B 18 Bolo. Developed from the DC 2 commercial airliner it was a replacement for the Martin B 10 in 1934. It was initially selected over the B 17 when the prototype for the B 17 crashed because the control surfaces had been locked. Most of the B 18 fleet in the Pacific was destroyed by the attack on Pearl Harbor and it did not see any further action in that theater. It served as anti submarin [more]

[02.05.2007] For my self this has to be one of the easiest of National Wildlife Refuges to get to. All I really have to do is get on my bicycle and let it roll down the hill. This the smallest urban National Wildlife Refuge in the United States. It comes in at a hefty 72 acres. It sits right in the middle of the city of Arvada, Colorado. There are actually three entrances. One is just off a residential area, another just behind a [more]

[23.04.2007] There are several ways to get to Dinosaur Ridge but they all boil down to either West Alameda Parkway or Rooney Road. This takes the viewer to the visitor center. The W Alameda Parkway will take the visitor over the actual ridge. It was constructed in the 1930's by the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps). It was during the construction that the riches from the distant past were discovered. The viewing of the 17 info [more]

[21.04.2007] Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge is right off the Denver International Airport property line on the east. On the west it is bordered by Quebec and the south by 56th Avenue. The current entrance for the public is on 56th Avenue. Admittance to the refuge is free, most of the educational programs are free and the tours are free but registration is required. There is a small $3 fee for fishing on the r [more]

[08.04.2007] I had had a pretty intense day. I drove from Denver to Montrose to view the Black Canyon of the Gunnison the long way. It took about six hours. I then spent about two hour to two and a half hours hiking in the national park. After the park it was another drive to Grand Junction that was about an hour. Then cruising through Grand Junction for about half an hour to figure a plan of action for seeing the Colorado Nation [more]

[07.04.2007] The Black Canyon of the Gunnison is very easy to get to. It is on US 50 between the cities of Gunnison and Montrose, Colorado. Montrose is about 60 miles southeast of Grand Junction. I drove down from Denver via I-25 and US 50 picking up US 50 in Pueblo from there it is a straight shot west on US 50. Montrose is about 9.5 km west of the park entrance. Normally the entrance fee is $15 per vehicle. This is good for [more]

[03.04.2007] The second stop on a weekend trip to see western Colorado was to be the Colorado National Monument. This was my first visit to the place and I did not know what to expect. I drove up US highway 50 from Montrose and my visit to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison the day before. After stumbling around a bit in the dark in Grand Junction I managed to find two things; 1) the entrance road to the monument and 2) a cheap [more]

[12.03.2007] I have always enjoyed the Pepsi Center. For the last four years I have been in partnership with a group that has season tickets for the Colorado Avalanche. We each get to go to eleven games a season so there have been plenty of visits. Our seats are right near the rafters. We are way up there but we always vote to get the same seats the next year. The line of sight is very good, access to the seats is easy. However t [more]

[12.03.2007] Denver's Union Station is a grand old structure. It looks like the set of an old Chicago gangster movie like the recent iteration of the "Untouchables" with Kevin Costner and Sean Connery. The high backed seat in the waiting area and the way the building echoes when one walks through the building are very nostalgic. Unlike Europe where train travel is very common here it is not. Now there are only a few trains that c [more]
