    Gillette Castle is located in East Haddam in Connecticut, and I can thoroughly recommend a visit. This is a truly amazing place and was originally built not as a castle, but as a home for William Hooker Gillette, an actor who was most famous for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes.     The Portland Observatory is located about 5 blocks from the harbour. It is built like an inland lighthouse and is a very interesting building. They offer walking tours of the building, which we did not feel was strictly necessary, as we could have done a self-guided tour just as easily.     The Mohawk Trail in Massachusetts is a pleasant 63-mile drive along Route 2. We picked up the drive at Leominster and followed it through to North Adams near the New York and Vermont boarders. You travel through lots of little towns and villages and the scenery is lovely.     This is an excellent hotel to use as a base in Atlanta. You can park you car in the car-park and forget about it as everything can be accessed either on foot, or by local transport. It is next to the Centennial Park with all its own attractions as well as being the centre of the action on July 4th (Independence Day).     You can access this trail from North Adams, but you have to watch out for the sign, as it is accessed via an unlikely road through a residential estate. Once on this road, you cant really go wrong, as it leads straight to the mountain. The trail is along a winding, tree-lined, and narrow road.     This is a 34-mile highway located on Route 112 between Conway and Lincoln in New Hampshire running through the White Mountains National Forest.     York Beach is located just north of Kittery in Maine. We stopped off here on our way up to Portland, and we can definitely recommend it. We did not stop in the town itself, but followed the road to the lighthouse area. Here there is a large car park with shops, restaurants, etc., but the main attraction is the lighthouse.
