[KateKirkpatrick, 18/11/2005] The Sacred Monkey Forest in Ubud was one of my favourite places we visited during our four-week stay in Bali. It is very accessible, within walking distance of most hotels in downtown Ubud, and easy to visit with a car, as we did. There are over two hundred macaques residing in this forest, and it seems like we probably saw nearly all of them when we visited. Many of them were lounging near a small pond in the centre of the main intersection of paths, bathing and playing and teasing tourists. Andy and Susanne found the Monkey Forest, a "small" nature preserve, to have "lush surroundings and a beautiful temple". They said it was "amazing how close you can get to the monkeys" but recommend not to pet them and to be "carefull around them", since they are "famous for stealing food and sunglasses". The site comes with a lot of photos.

Mizzoulaw visited the Monkey Forest with his wife while they were in Bali for their honeymoon. He describes the lush tropical vegetation as inviting, but says that the temples, moss-covered temple statues and monkeys, it was an incredible experience.
