[Newfloridian, 17.09.2006] "Splendidly situated" as this hotel is "above the golden strand" of Long Sands Beach, there are "excellent" views Tynemouth Bay from the "seafront rooms". The author recalls this "imposing Victorian" building was "popular" with Laurel and Hardy who "always stayed here" when "appearing" in Newcastle. He was allocated a "spacious" en-suite "double" on the "fourth floor". "Well decked" with "tasteful heavy wooden furniture", the room also had "satellite TV" and "tea- and coffee- making facilities". He found the bed "firm" and "comfortable" but "a tad short" for a very tall person. The bathroom had a "walk in" shower and "Jacuzzi" although this was found only in the "most expensive rooms". The lounge with its "large comfortable armchairs" was the "perfect place" to watch the North Sea "crashing" on to "the beach below" whilst drinking "afternoon tea". He described the restaurant as "superbly decorated" in a "classic Victorian theme" and noted "impressively huge" chandeliers. With such dishes as "Dover sole" and "baked aubergine" it is "recognised" as "one of the best" restaurants in the area. The reviewer also found time to "take a walk" along the beach and to visit the "rather twee" Tynemouth village for a "potter" around the "craft shops". He also noted the "closeness" of Newcastle city centre by Metro and "historic" Durham and the "magnificent" Northumberland coast line by car.
