Compiled for you: The facts!Details Tynemouth Castle and Priory

Description: The headland at the mouth of the River Tyne has always a site of defence against the invader. It has also been a religious site since the seventh century when St Oswin, King of Northumbria was buried in the monastery. A Benedictine priory was built on the site in about 1100AD within which was built the priory church one hundred years later. Walls and battlements were added by Edward I and Henry VIII declared it a royal castle on the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The ruins of Priory and Castle are now in the care of English Heritage. It is the site of exhibitions and plays.
