The headland at the mouth of the River Tyne has always a site of defence against the invader. It has also been a religious site since the seventh century when St Oswin, King of Northumbria was buried in the monastery. A Benedictine priory was built on the site in about 1100AD within which was built the priory church one hundred years later. Walls and battlements were added by Edward I and Henry VIII declared it a royal castle on the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The ruins of Priory and Castle are now in the care of English Heritage. It is the site of exhibitions and plays. Opening: Daily (April 1 September 30) 10am 5pm Daily (October 1 31) 10am 4pm Mon, Thurs, Fri, Sat, Sun (November 1 March 31) 10am 4pm Closed: January 1st , December 24 26 Admission: Adults: £3.40 Children: £ 1.70 Free to English Heritage Members Family tickets available. |
