Büyükada is the biggest of a group of 9 small islands in the sea of Marmara. The name of this group - meaning "princes' islands" - derives from a number of monasteries where Byzantine princes where exiled to. The museum consists of three buildings and is located between Gülhane Park and the Topkapi Palace. In the various halls of the Archaeology Museum, which also includes the Museum of the Ancient Orient, there are a variety of sarcophagi, tombstones, epitaphs, busts, sculptures, reliefs, column heads and mosaics from Greek, Roman and Byzantine antiquity on display. There is also the Çinili Kösk (Tiled Pavilion) which features 16th century ceramics and is one of the oldest buildings in Istanbul.

The Topkapi Palace was built by orders of Sultan Fatih Mehmet "The Conqueror" and finished in 1478. It served as residence to the Ottoman Sultans and was the centre of the administration. The Palace, which covered an area of 700.000 sq metres then, is surrounded by a 5 km long wall. The remaining 80.000 sq metres that are still existing consist of two main sections which are divided into living quarters and administration and educational buildings.

The Hagia Irene or St Irene Church is located in the outer Courtyard of the Topkapı Palace. St Irene was the first church built in Constantinople - presumably on the site of a pre-Christian temple. The church was built by orders of Emperor Constantin I. during the 4th century.
Over the centuries it was heavily damaged by fire and earthquakes but restored every time and during the Ottoman rule it served as an armoury, warehouse and museum.

The Dolmabahce Palace was built between 1842 and 1853 and was the first European-style castle to be built in Istanbul. It cost Sultan Abdul Mecit the equivalent of 35 tons of gold, of which 14 only were used to decorate the ceilings in the interior of the building.
