Buyukada - Princes' Islands

Büyükada is the biggest of a group of 9 small islands in the sea of Marmara. The name of this group - meaning "princes' islands" - derives from a number of monasteries where Byzantine princes where exiled to. Büyükada and its sister islands feature a rich vegetation and hiking routes. They can be accessed by ferryboats from various ferryports in Istanbul. No motorised vehicles are allowed on the islands. Archaeology Museum

The museum consists of three buildings and is located between Gülhane Park and the Topkapi Palace. In the various halls of the Archaeology Museum, which also includes the Museum of the Ancient Orient, there are a variety of sarcophagi, tombstones, epitaphs, busts, sculptures, reliefs, column heads and mosaics from Greek, Roman and Byzantine antiquity on display. There is also the Çinili Kösk (Tiled Pavilion) which features 16th century ceramics and is one of the oldest buildings in Istanbul. The Dolmabahce Palace was built between 1842 and 1853 and was the first European-style castle to be built in Istanbul. Izutuzu Beach is also known as Turtle Beach due to the endangered Caretta Turtle that lays its eggs eggs there. This Turtle is also known as the Loggerhead Turtle. This beach has fresh water from the River Dalyan on one side of it and the Mediterranean sea on the other. It can reached by boat from the village of Dalyan which costs 5 Turkish Lira for a return (2007) or by Dolmus at the same cost. This beach stretches for about 6km.
