The Basilica of Saint-Sernin in Toulouse is considered to be the biggest Romanesque style edifice in Western Europe. The 11th century edifice, which is made of red brick, stands along the Saint Jacques de Compostelle route, in Toulouse. It was built on the previous site of the abbey church of St. Sernin. The nave is of a considerable size and there is a sculpted Romanesque chapter. The crypt shelters relics of Saint Saturnin, who was the first bishop of Toulouse in 250AD. Charlemagne offered a number of these relics to the basilica, and there are a number of relics of other saint, including Saint Honoratus. The basilica is of a cruciform shape with vaulted ceilings and measures 115 metres long, 64 metres width wise and 21 metres high wise. The basilica is open to the public all year from 8.30am and closing times vary from 5.45pm in the winter to 7pm in the summer months.
