Description: The Tees barrage opened in 1995 and is owned by British Waterways. The bridge weights 650 tonnes and took 4 years to build. There are four differnt flood gates that keep the tidal river at a constant height. Built into the bridge design is a walk/cycleway as well as a road to cross the River Tees. The barrage has improved the water quality of the Tees to a grade "A" standard. A Salmon leap has also been constructed, which allows Salmon to get up river to spawn.
