It is built on the site of the 1885 battle that brought about the establishment of the Bhutnese monarchy.
The stadium is also used for major state occasions such as the 2008 coronation of the 5th King for which the stadium underwent a major refurbishment and expansion programme to increase the capacity to 25000 people.
The stadium is home to the Bhutanese Olympic Committee.
