Poppy's is the perfect place for a break after doing some sightseeing an walking in Thaxted.
Although Poppy's is a bit hidden its location couldn't be any better. It can be found right behind the historic guildhall of Thaxted, which is the centre piece of the town, in a quaint little street. They don't offer parking but there are plenty of public parking spaces close by.
The interior is dominated by a huge fireplace, the ceilings are not too high, and if they'd gone for a darker décor the room would probably make you feel slightly claustrophobic. Thankfully they have stayed away from dark colours and have decorated their tearoom light and bright and the result is a very cozy room in which you'll love to settle down with a cuppa. Especially if you've just returned from a long walk through the fields (there are plenty of public footpaths around) on a cold and windy day it is a wonderful place to warm up.
They have a good selection of coffee's and teas, hot chocolate and milkshakes are a favourite with our kids. The girls loved the chocolate milkshake they've got, it came in a huge glass and both our daughters declared it was the best they've ever had. It must have been good as the portion was ridiculously large for a six and a seven year old and they managed to finish it until the last drop.
The drinks are served in porcelain tea/coffee pots; sugar doesn't come in a sachet but in cubes in a porcelain bowl.
They offer a variety of home made cakes and freshly prepared sandwiches. Cakes vary daily; small blackboards on the walls announce what is on offer.
I'm not sure whether they serve any warm dishes, we always went there in the afternoon for coffee and cakes.
So far whatever we've tried was delicious, the jam next to the scones seemed home made, and portions are well sized. The girls love the chocolate fudge cake, my husband prefers carrot cake, for me it's usually scones or a sandwich.
The prices are absolutely average and very reasonable and the service, provided by the owner herself, is very friendly and fast.
For us a place we love to return, not just because it is convenient but also because we love the ambience and the cakes. For me the best place in Thaxted if you are looking for something small to eat and a nice warm drink.
