[more]Morris dancing is a traditional English folk dance that dates back to the 15th century. The dancers are usually accompanied by music, traditionally by melodeon, pipe, fiddle, tabor and concertina.
Handkerchiefs, swords or clay pipes are often part of the dance.
In 1911 the vicar of Thaxted, Conrad Noel, decided to revive the interest in this traditional form of dancing and founded the Morris Ring. Today the Thaxted Morris Men are the oldest still existing Morris dancer group and Thaxted is considered to be the home of Morris dancing.
The Morris Men of Thaxted hold their Ring Meeting every year on the weekend after the Spring Bank holiday weekend. More than 200 Morris sides are members of the Morris Ring and meet in Thaxted for two days of dancing and music.
The festivities are held along Town Street and finally culminate with a performance of the Abbots Bromley Horn Dance in front of the medieval guildhall.
The admission to the festival is free.
