| Description: |
Thaxted Guildhall is one of the few remaining Guildhalls in the area and a fine example of medieval architecture. The Guildhall was built in the late 14th century for the Cutlers Guild and overlooks the medieval market place. The building features a covered open market place on the ground floor and an open gallery on the top floor which was probably used as meeting place for the guild and home to the warden. Due to the decline of the guild the building was sold in 1556 and fell into disrepair until it was converted into a Grammar school at the end of the 18th century. It served the village as a school until 1878 and during these years has undergone refurbishments which lead to the enclosing and paneling of much of the top floor. Today the Guildhall is owned by Essex County Council and in use again. Meetings of the Parish Council are held here, as well as events, and a photo exhibition which documents the history of the town can be visited. Opening times: Weekends 11am 5pm , admission is free |
