In a land obsessed with martyrdom, every street corner and every roundabout seems to be decorated with the faces of the martyrs - mostly those who died during the Revolution or the Iran-Iraq war. The author reports that a decade after his death, the shrine of Ayatollah Khomeini is still unfinished but is "destined to become one of the world's greatest centres of pilgrimage for Shi'ite Moslems" (Note - this dates the review to 1999 but I can confirm that today in 2006 it is still far from finished). The dome over the actual shrine is covered in gold paint, but will later be "overlaid in gold leaf". It has four minarets and together they dominate the "huge complex bordering the Behesht-e-Zahra cemetery", where many of Iran's war dead from the Iran-Iraq war are buried. A further fou
