Taronga Zoo has been described as the most picturesque zoo in the world and I certainly would not argue with that. It is situated across the bay from the Sydney Opera house in a location called Mosman and has been its home since it was opened in 1916. They best way to approach the zoo is by ferry from Circular Quay and the crossing takes around 12 minutes other ways are by bus from the city centre or by car. If going by ferry you can buy a combination ticket which includes transport and admission. This lands you at the foot of the hill and you can catch a bus to the top or if you are brave take the cable car.
Admission prices were about A$30 when we visited but this could well have increased as that was in 2005. The zoo is open every day and when we were there in September it was a popular trip for local school children. A point to take into account when looking for somewhere to eat that is not too crowded.
The zoo which is set in approximately 28 hectares is home to 2,600 animals many of them are species from Australia including the kangaroo, the koala and the platypus to name a few. Being built on a hill you approach from the top and work your way down and the animals are viewed with a backdrop of Sydney Harbour which make it stunning
If you are lucky enough to visit Sydney then this is a trip I highly recommend
