The author states that from a distance Dunottar Castle seemed "quite big" and it took him a "half hour leisurely walk" to reach an area directly opposite it. From his vantage point he appreciated why that particular, easy-to-defend site had been selected and he describes it as for "probably more than 2000 years" having housed a fortress. Considered worthy of "a few hours exploring" and enjoying the "great seaside views", Dunottar Castle is steeped in history and said to be more than "just a fortification" as it includes some of the "most luxurious buildings" of the era.
