Situated in Hout Bay, the World of Birds started as a small private sanctuary and has grown to include more than 400 species of birds and small animals, making it the largest such park on the African continent.
The focus is not only on conservation, but also on providing city dwellers free access to these varied animals and an opportunity to interact with nature. There are kiosks on the premises and access is wheelchair friendly. Details of the various species and the layout of the Park can be found at the website.
Robben Island Museum
Robben Island, approximately 12 km off the Table Bay coast, is steeped in history and has served, amongst other things, as a military base and leper colony. It has also been a penitentiary for many years and was where Nelson Mandela and other political prisoners were incarcerated since the nineteen-sixties.
Since 1997 it has become a museum and guided tours, which last about three and a half hours and include a visit to the Maximum Security Prison, are available. Robben Island was declared a World Heritage Site in 1999.
