[Fritzthecat, 29.03.2007] Frommers very highly recommends this hotel which "distinguished pedigree" reaches back to 1889, when it opened its doors to "wealthy vacationers" for the first time. The author writes that the "original structure" was heavily damaged "by fire" but later "rebuilt in sumptuous Tudor style". The hotel was extended in 1993 with a "architectural sympathetic addition", the new part is "linked by a gatehouse-inspired bridge" to the older part.
The author states that the hotel impresses with its "sheer size and aristocratic bearing" and also the "kilt wearing, bagpipe-playing staff" doesn't go unmentioned. It is noted that although the hotel is located "several long blocks" from the seafront it still offers "panoramic bay views" from the "roof garden" and "many guest rooms" which is down to its position "on the brow of a hill". The writer describes the rooms as "comfortable and tasteful" and notes that they have been redecorated "recently" and offer "hair-dryers and coffeemakers". The Algonquin often caters for large groups and the author felt that it can get a bit overwhelming at times. The main restaurant is rated as one of the "more enjoyable spots in town", offers "creative meals" and is "great (for) people watching". The writer further notes that there are also several "informal dining options" within the hotel and the "Italian bistro" at the golf club of the hotel is "well worth the drive".
