[more]Dorothy Nyembe Park is part of the Johannesburg network of city parks. Located in Soweto, it is a ‘people’s park’ named for one of the pioneers in the struggle against apartheid in South Africa. The multifunctional park was renovated in 2003, complete with an upgraded sports complex (for netball, volleyball, basketball, and soccer) as well as venues for board games such as chess and morabaraba (a traditional African game).
The park contains a natural wetland that serves as a haven to numerous bird species. Visitors can watch the birds inconspicuously from a nearby hide. Two lakes are fed by the wetland. Walking trails are plentiful. Facilities include braai areas for cooking, a children’s playground, and an amphitheater for concerts and performances. Sculpture and attractive signs also dot the park's landscape.
The solar-powered Dorothy Nyembe Environmental Education Centre, which is located at the park, offers a variety of ecological programs to the larger community, including some designed specifically for school children. This pioneering institution was recognized by the United Nations with a gold medal for Liveable Communities.
