Compiled for you: The facts!Details The Workhouse
| Description: |
The Workhouse at Southwell is one of the best surviving Workhouses of the 19th and early 20th century within England and Wales. The work of the Reverend of Southwell Parish and the surrounding parishes around Southwell made this Workhouse the model for Workhouses nationally under the Poor Laws. The Workhouse was bought by the National Trust in 1997 so it could be preserved as it was possibly going to be converted to luxury flats. It was opened to the public in 2002. Visitors use an audio tour to guide themselves around the Workhouse. Some rooms have been left exactly how they were found by the Trust The Workhouse is open 12-5 everyday during the summer, except for on Tuesdays. The opening hours are more restricted during the autumn and winter months. |
