Hotel Janus has a lot going for it in terms of decor and location. If you want to be close to Lake Balaton and its beaches and attractions this is a good place to stay - close enough without being in the busiest, more touristy area at the lakeside.
Each room and suite at this hotel has its own theme. Ours was the Egyptian/Cleopatra suite and, for a reasonable £85 or so a night including breakfast, this gave us a large lounge area with wooden staircase up to a mezzanine level bedroom in the sloped roof area. Egyptian murals and hieroglyphics decorated the walls of the lounge and bedroom and the large corner sofa downstairs had smart themed cushions. Because of the very high ceilings it had a wonderful feeling of spaciousness. The bathroom was a good size with large shower cubicle (no bathtub).
The Hotel Janus is an attractive building, formerly a chapel and school and it has been sympathetically converted sometime in the 1990s. There is a pleasant open air courtyard in the centre of the building. The high-ceilinged downstairs lounge also has free internet access via one PC. When we were there the restaurant was closed, although there was a large breakfast room where a buffet breakfast could be taken. The staff were generally very good although language was slight problem with some, whose English was almost non-existent - a bit like our Hungarian! There's an indoor pool but it was so hot when we were there that we didn't use it, preferring to be outdoors. There was not much of a bar service in the evenings but there are so many bars and eating places in Siofok, especially at the lakeside - about half a kilometre or so away - that this wasn't a problem.
As mentioned above, the hotel was not operating a restaurant while we were there - although on our first visit in 1998 it did. The room it occupied is still there so might perhaps be turned into a restaurant again in the future. Breakfast was a standard buffet, nothing out of the ordinary but perfectly adequate and included in the room rate. The breakfast room was pleasant and quite spacious.
We arrived by train from Budapest and the hotel couldn't be more convenient - literally a two minute walk from the station. On the downside if you left the bathroom window open you could hear the train announcements and also the trains but this wasn't too intrusive. The hotel is in the main part of the town, about 400-500 metres from the lakeside and the "touristy" part of Siofok. Since our first visit in 1998, a pedestrianised street full of bars and restaurants has sprung up on the way to the lake, about 5 minutes walk from the hotel. We found this area a terrific place to sit outside and watch the world go by.
