"Cool cat" Debbie Lawson decided to stay in the "laid-back" village of Sidi Bou Said, "20 minutes away" from the city centre. The "one place to stay" in this "chi-chi coastal" area is the Hotel Dar Said. At least according to Condé Nast Traveller magazine, who puts it in its "50 top hotels in the world". Dating back to the 19th century, this "former [...] palace" is tucked away in a "discreet side" road. The interior of the Dar Saïd hotel contrasts with the busy streets outside. It is an oasis of "calm, comfort and repose". "Less ornate" than its Moroccan counterparts, this 19th century "mansion" has been "lovingly restored" in an "intimate and unpretentious" style. This attention to details continue into the "well-equipped" bedrooms, where "cool blues" and "subtle eau-de-nil" contrast with the "marble-and-ceramic" bathrooms. The hotel doesn't have a restaurant, but is well served by nearby Dar Zarrouk "just across the road".

In his quest to find out whether Tunisia was catching up with nearby Morocco as the new "hippest winter holiday destination", Sean O'Hagan first stayed at the Dar Said.
