Compiled for you: The facts!Details Birley Spa
| Description: |
Birley Spa is an example of one of the last remaining Victorian bath houses in Britain. It dates from 1843 and was noted for the healing properties of its waters. It stands in a wooded ravine that includes a fishing pond. It was originally built by Earl Manvers, Lord of the Manor of Beighton, who turned it into a hotel. By 1960 it had fallen into a state of disrepair and was due to be demolished but it saved because it was granted Grade 2 listed status. Birley Spa is now owned by Sheffield city council and has been fully restored. It is open to the public on the first Saturday of every month from 10 am until midday when a free guided tour takes place. |
