This wildlife refuge encompasses some 45,818 acres and is located in the sandhills of Nebraska. This is part of the largest continuous sand dune area in North America. There are 21 lakes feed by an aquifer lying just below the surface. The refuge is located about 28 miles north of Oshkosh, Nebraska near Ellsworth, Nebraska. The headquarters are some 100 miles to the west in Scottsbluff. There is no cost to use the refuge but there is no camping on the refuge itself. There are opportunities for fishing, hunting, photography and wildlife observation. |
