Museum of Transport - Glasgow, United Kingdom
Be transported back in time! (08.12.2006 11:03)
The reopening of the Kelvingrove Art museum after a long closure for refurbishment was something of an event in Glasgow. However, the day we chose to go and visit it, the event was of a different nature and had more to do with faulty plumbing. The result was, the museum was closed that morning and no-one knew when it would reopen. We were at a bit of a loose end, so we decided to kill a couple [more...]

    Gods own Island (17.11.2006 16:06)
I feel quite nervous about writing this review as I really want to do the place justice. It has a very special place in my heart, but I am afraid that, as I describe it, you will think "what's the big deal". You see Gigha (pronounce gee-a with a hard 'G'), is an island of subtle charms, a connoisseur's choice, an acquired taste. No flashy shops here, no restaurant upon restaurant, and certainly [more...]

This way to paradise (10.11.2006 20:15)
The island of Gigha (pronounce gee - a) really is a beautiful place. My family and I often go there for the day and the only way to travel, unless you have your own boat, is to take the Caledonian MacBrayne (or CalMac as they are known around here) ferry. This is a very informal affair, and all you do is turn up roughly 10 minutes before the next sailing and wait (see times below). If you want [more...]

Holyrood Scottish Parliament Building - Edinburgh, United Kingdom
No Oscars for Holyrood! (27.10.2006 13:40)
When the Scottish Parliament was reinstated in 1999, after a 292 years holiday, it needed a home. For four years, it met in the Assembly Hall of the Church of Scotland whilst the new building was being constructed. From the very start, this project was plagued by controversy and difficulties. The chosen site, at the bottom of the Royal Mile, was not everyones favourite, and some even [more...]

Kilmartin Valley - Kilmartin, United Kingdom
The valley of ghosts. (04.10.2006 08:47)
You have to see this place to believe it. What if I was to tell you that within a six miles radius of the village of Kilmartin, there are 350 monuments, 150 of them prehistoric? You might wonder why you have never heard of it (unless of course you have heard of it!). To me, this should be a UNESCO World Heritage site. Instead, it is a little known spot, and the excellent Kilmartin House Museum [more...]

    Brel - Glasgow, United Kingdom
A great dining experience in Glasgows West End (25.09.2006 15:44)
The small town where we live has very little in the way of decent eateries, so when we get the chance, my husband and I like to spend a weekend in Glasgow, look round the shops (a bit of a novelty for us) and have a nice meal out. One place we go back to again and again is Bar Brel, in Ashton Lane. Location The west end of Glasgow has an atmosphere all its own. It is a favourite haunt of [more...]
