According to me, this is the largest attraction in the territory of Salzburg. [Jamie73, 19/07/2007] As me and Dayle (my girlfriend)have just returned from our holiday in Salzburg, Austria I thought I would write a review on the Hohansalzburg Fortress we visited while we were there. Location. The Hohensalzburg Fortress is situated on Mountain of Hohensalzburg and the fortress looms over the City and you can really see how prominent it is if you sit in the Cathedral Square below and look up at it. Pages 255 - 256 of the Green Guide to Austria (2001 edition) contain a review of this castle. It directs the visitor to the funicular which provides an easy route to the top of this "block of Dolomite rock" 400 ft above the Salzach river. Begun in the 11th century by Archbishop Gebhard to provide a "safe retreat" it was enlarged and refurbished to become "a comfortable residence", although it was also reinforced by towers, bastions and arms depots.
