Compiled for you: The facts!Details Webb Ellis Rugby Football Museum

Description: Almost every rugby fan will know the story of how the game began when William Webb Ellis, a pupil at Rugby school, picked up the ball during a game of football and ran with it. From such simple origins the game grew into a worldwide phenomenon that's reflected in the Webb Ellis Rugby Football Museum. The museum is located within the shop where James Gilbert first made rugby balls back in 1842.

The museum collection is privately owned but managed by the local city museum. Entrance to the public is through a sports shop that stands next door. Exhibits record the origins and growth of the game, explaining how it spread to the countries where it's now played, showing photographs of early teams and commemorating visits from national teams - all of whom come to pay homage at the birthplace of the game. Exhibits also include how to make a rugby ball.

Entrance is free and the museum is open Monday to Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm. Wheelchair access is limited due to the layout of the museum and visitors with mobility issues are advised to phone ahead to discuss their visit.
