Compiled for you: The facts!Details Mount Stuart

Description: Built between 1879 and 1900 by the third Marquess of Bute, this red stone palace in the Gothic style is the Isle of Bute's main visitor attraction. The Marquess never saw the house finished in his lifetime, in fact some of the work was only completed in the 1980s. It boasts the world's first domestic indoor heated swimming pool and was also the first house in Scotland to have electricity. The house is no longer a family home since 1989 but is run by the Mount Stuart Trust. Visitors can also enjoy the 300 acres of gardens surrounding the house.

Since 2001, a modern visitor centre welcomes tourists with its shop, audio-visual room and restaurant.

The House and gardens are open daily from the beginning of May to the end of September, the gardens from 10 am to 6 pm and the house from 11 am to 5 pm from Sunday to Friday and from 10 am to 2.30 pm on Saturdays. This attraction is accessible to visitors using a wheelchair.
