[more]In the year 2000 a Russian family bought an ancient stone-built village inn on the seashore at Port Bannatyne, a fishing and yachting bay on the Isle of Bute off the coast of West Scotland. The shabby old bar was converted into a reproduction of a Russian Tavern of Imperial Times complete with great stone fireplace, piano, beer barrels dispensing live beer, with Russian tapestries and wooden dolls aplenty. Most importantly they installed a full stainless steel French kitchen with steam ovens.
Today those touring West Scotland by car, foot or boat stop by THE RUSSIAN TAVERN to eat high class Russian Cuisine, drink Russian beers, wines and vodkas, and enjoy the conversation, games of chess and cards and the pleasant company that makes for the ambiance here. Through the windows of the tavern are truly stunning views across the water to the highlands of Argyll.
For those wishing to stay the night or come to Port Bannatyne as a base for their holiday there are five unpretentious guestrooms which should be booked in advance. Included in the economical accommodation price are substantial Russian breakfasts consisting of: Cereals with milk, yogurt and honey, tropical fresh fruit salad, freshly baked bread and farm butter and home-jam, and fresh croissants. This is followed by a hot platter serving on a bed of local wild salads baked tomatoes stuffed with ginger and garlic; baked capsicum pepper wrapped in fine smoked ham; slim Russian venison sausages; and a freshly baked tartelette filled with local wild fungi in beaten egg which rises like a souffle
