The author describes the Castel Sant'Angelo as being an "imposing round hunk". Originally built to be Hadrians mausoleum, it was "converted into a fortress" in the year 6 AD for the popes. After "Pope Gregory the Great" claimed to have seen "a phantom angel hovering over the building" he "re-christened the fortress". It was linked "by a wall and passageway" to the Vatican in 1277, so that the popes could be in safety in "times of danger". In the 16th century, "hundreds of people lived in the fortress for months".
