The present day Rome is completely different from that first settlement as the Romans kept rebuilding on top of their city, covering up the previous city. Of the few things that never got built over was the Forum Romanum, or Roman Forum. This was the marketplace and the religious and administrative centre of the city. It has been continuously in use through the centuries, being used as late as World War II by locals. Later on, the area was used as a ready-made marble quarry, supplying the construction stone for much of the later buildings.
