Darwin Porter reports that this is "the cathedral of the diocese of Rome" and the place where "the pope comes to celebrate Mass on certain holidays". Frommers highly recommend a visit and state that the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano is located opposite "one of the holiest sites in Christendom", namely the Santuario della Scala Santa. It is also adjacent to the Palazzo Laterano and was "built in A.D. 314 by Constantine".
