The author starts by saying that Robben Island and its museum is "one of the most popular destinations" in the whole town. He "heartily" recommends to go there, although a visit "is not without its drawbacks". It is often crowded here and the guided tour is "woefully short". Sometimes visitors can wander around on their own for some minutes. In this case, the author recommends not to see the penguins but to see the "remarkable and very moving" exhibition called "Cell Stories". The isolation cells each tell a story from a former prisoner. Robben Island is a “"minute speck" but a "mighty landmark" in South Africa's history. Famous, of course, for Mandela's "27 years in captivity" it was used in the past by the British to imprison rebellious Xhosa chiefs, and later as a leper colony and lunatic asylum. Its isolation "across a freezing stretch of wild water" which is "inhabited by great white sharks" makes it ideal for these purposes. The tour guides are former political prisoners who have "unrivalled insight" and give a "compelling authenticity" to the details of conditions in the prison. Visitors are shown the cell blocks
