Leaning Tower of Pisa - Pisa, Italy
Leaning Tower of Pisa (25.11.2007 17:11)
One of the highlights of our trip to Tuscany last year was to be our visit to Pisa. To be accurate, the main attraction was not so much the city of Pisa itself, charming though it undoubtedly is, but the Field of Miracles. Well, to be punctiliously precise, it wasn't even the Field of Miracles that had our anticipatory juices flowing, but The Leaning Tower of Pisa in particular. The Field of [more...] -
Auschwitz-Birkenau - Auschwitz, Poland
AUSCHWITZ - BIRKENAU (06.09.2007 19:19)
The State Museum in Oswiecim. Doesn't sound too sinister, does it? But use the German name for the city - Auschwitz - and it doesn't sound quite so cozy. It conjures up images of terror, unspeakable cruelty, bestiality and genocide. It is the epitome of the Holocaust. A Short History The camp was formed by the Nazis in April 1940, in the suburbs of the Polish city of Oswiecim. Initially, [more...] -
Best Western Nieuwvliet-Bad - Nieuwvliet-Bad, Netherlands - January, 2004
(19.02.2006 20:19)
Ahhh.... that brisk sea air, what better way to blow those dusty old cobwebs away. Location Nieuwvliet-bad is a small resort on the North sea coast of Zeeland in the extreme South-west of the Netherlands. The hotel is situated in a quiet peaceful location only around 100m or so from the beach. The hotel has a total of 35 rooms: 12 Standard rooms, 14 standard rooms with balcony, 5 salon [more...] -
Pisa International Airport Galileo Galilei - Pisa, Italy
Galileo Galilei will you do the fandango... (07.02.2006 20:21)
Pisa International Airport, or, as Ryanair like to call it, 'Florence airport' likes to call itself 'the Strategic gateway to Tuscany'. If all that weren't confusing enough, its Sunday name is Pisa International Airport - Galileo Galilei. Of course, it doesn't really matter what its called - what matters is whether the flight you want goes there...and I suppose, departs from there. When we took [more...] -
Sheraton Fallsview - Niagara Falls, Canada - November, 2001
A View of the Falls (09.01.2006 21:04)
My wife and I visited Canada in 2001 for our silver wedding anniversary, but the highlight of our trip had to be our two night stay at the Sheraton Fallsview. The reception area was somewhat cavernous with a waterfall feature in the central area next to a massive staircase. I wonder where they got the inspiration for a water feature?! There were a couple of gift shops and a coffee shop in [more...] -
Palace Best Western Zandvoort - Zandvoort, Netherlands - January, 2005
Zand Castl...um, Palace (27.12.2005 19:56)
It's hard to miss the Best Western Palace in Zandvoort, its 20-odd floors rise above the town like a monolithic concrete slab (which it is) and dominates the coastline for miles around. That and the fact it's well signposted. Zandvoort lies a few miles north of Amsterdam on the windswept North Sea coast of Holland. It's not a large place anyway, but the hotel completely dwarfs almost [more...] -
Alhambra - Granada, Spain - June, 2004
Recuerdos del Alhambra (27.12.2005 19:20)
The Alcazaba originally dated from the 9th century, but was enlarged and modified in the 13th century by Muhammed III, as his private residence. Apparently, because the clay used in the construction glows so fiery in the setting sun, it became known as The Red Castle - Calat al-Hamra - Alhambra. This was what we came to see - and if what we had read and heard about it was to be believed, [more...] -
Holiday Inn Garden Court Leuven - Leuven, Belgium - September, 2004
A Hole Inn Leuven (23.12.2005 17:44)
Where to spend the last couple of days of our holiday in Germany? Easy - Leuven. Yes, I know it's in Belgium. But we were traveling home via Brussels, so it's not as strange a choice as at first seems. We booked the Holiday Inn Garden Court for our last couple of days - handy for the airport, and, let's face it, it would be nice to get my hands on some Belgian beer after all that German [more...] -
Tryp Alcano - Granada, Spain - June, 2004
We Trypped up with the ALCANO (06.11.2005 19:23)
Our main reason for visiting Granada was to see the Alhambra which, although it seems to be near the centre of the city, is much more accessible from the ring roads. We therefore decided on a hotel which was close to the main access routes, yet in a peaceful location. So with that in mind, I booked the Tryp Alcano (part of the Sol Melia group), just 5km from the bustling heart of this ancient [more...] -
Ibis Charleroi Aéroport - Fleurus, Belgium - April, 2003
Ibis Charleroi Airport (05.10.2005 20:21)
The hotel (a 3-storey building constructed in 1999) is in the village of Fleurus, North-East of Charleroi city, and 5 Km from the airport - they have a shuttle service. Take Exit 15 on the E42-A15 motorway, and it's 300m towards Charleroi on the N29, Chaussee de Charleroi. It's a relatively busy road but, as it's essentially a residential area, the traffic is fairly light in the evening. [more...]
