Russische Kolonie Alexandrowka

Russische Kolonie Alexandrowka

The Russian Colony Alexandrowka can be found at the Northern boundary of Potsdam. The 13 Russian-style wooden houses were built from 1826-1827 by orders of Prussian King Frederic William III. They were supposed to provide accommodation for Russian singers of the First Prussian Regiment of the Guards and designed by court architect Peter Joseph Lenné. In honour of one of the most important saints in the Russian church, the apostle St Andrew, the roads of the colony are aligned to shape a Saint Andrew's Cross. The whole colony was built as a replica of the Russian village Glasovo and just like in the original each house has its own garden. In the north of the colony you can find the Alexander-Newski-Church which was erected on the Kapellenberg, especially for the inhabitants of Alexandrowka. Only the male descendants of the singers could inherit the houses of the colony and today two of the houses are still owned by family members of the original owners. In house number 2 you can find a museum that describes the history of this unique settlement. Since 1990 the Colony Alexandrowka is, as part of the Palaces and Gardens of Potsdam and Berlin, listed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
