Zakynthos or Zante was the first holiday abroad for me and the first together with my wife, belated honeymoon.
We did a few excursions on the 2 week holiday, one of them being the island tour which included a boat trip to Smugglers Cove. If you have looked in a holiday brochure that includes the island of Zakynthos you will have seen an image of a shipwrecked boat half covered in sand, this is Smugglers Cove.
You can only reach Navagio beach its official name by boat, the bigger boats do not go right up to the beach so you need to swim to shore. The water is crystal clear, very deep and cold, which was a shock to the system when diving off the boat. So best to go on a smaller boat that can get closer to the beach if your not a competent swimmer.
The beach has no facilities as the boats only stop for a short while as most are part of excursions that are moving onto other parts of the island.
Once on the white sandy beach the sheer cliff face surrounds you on 3 sides, this and the shipwrecked boat make for an eerie presence.
Do not expect to be on the beach all alone like in the photos, this is a popular attraction and in the height of summer becomes very crowded. We visited in June which was not to bad, another couple told us they visited in August and it was totally overcrowded.
Overall we were glad to visit Smugglers Cove but it's not a place we would return to as once you have seen it the novelty factor will have worn off.
