[Fritzthecat, 13.03.2007] Frommers very highly recommends a visit to the church that once was "Paris's largest".The author recommends to have a close look at the fountain in front of the church before entering. It was built by Visconti in 1844 and shows four sculptures of bishops of the "Louis XIV era". Works on the church started in 1646 and it stopped in 1780 with one bell tower finished and the "other left incomplete". Inside one can see "priceless treasures" like the "Chapelle de la Madone" by Servandoni or "one of the world's largest organs".But it was the "Delacroix frescoes" in the "Chapelle des Anges" that impressed the author the most. The writer describes some of the scenes on the frescoes and states that it has been painted during the "final years" of Delacroix's life and that they were "a high point of his baffling career". For those who liked the frescoes he also recommends a visit to the Musee Delacroix. Further it is noted that the entrance to St Sulpice is free.
