The Centro in Oberhausen is a very large sports and shopping complex built in an area of town that used to be rather industrial but is now full of sparkling new buildings. I used to work for a company who had their German office close to the Centro and if we were staying overnight, the hotel that was always booked was the Tryp Centro since it was at that time newly built, well equipped and extremely close to the office.
For some reason that I never managed to find out, there was a large cow in reception. It's one of those things you just don't feel you ought to ask after you've been a couple of times, so I never did find out why she was there. The receptionists were efficient and always coped no matter the size of party that we booked in with. The rooms were of a good size and the bathrooms were excellent with walk in 'wet-room' style showers. One colleague with a food allergy (not from food in the hotel though) got so ill when staying at the hotel that he actually spent the night lying in the shower with his pillow and duvet clutched to him.
I only ever ate breakfast at the hotel and it was always good and I could get in and out quite quickly. The main attraction of staying there was being able to indulge in a bit of retail therapy in the shopping centre or going for a stroll by the waterside where there were some excellent restaurants. My personal favourite was a wok-to-order place called Wok and Roll.
I no longer have any reason to go to Oberhausen but if you do find yourself there and need to be near the Centro, I recommend the Tryp as a nice, quiet, well-equipped choice.
