Awesome! Totally awesome!!! Ive wanted to see this Wonder of the World for quite some time and was not at all disappointed when I finally did.
Niagara falls are made up of two falls, the American falls and the Canadian Horseshoe falls which is what most people think of when they visualise Niagara Falls. The Horseshoe Falls so named due to its shape, are approx 800m wide and 50m high. The American falls are almost as impressive at 56m high and about 330m wide along its crestline. We walked from opposite the American falls towards the Canadian falls and as we approached, the incredible roar of the ice cold waters grew ever louder and the falls were so powerful, we could feel the cold spray of the water from at least 400m away.
By the time we started to head back to find something to eat, it had started to get dark and the American falls looked spectacular lit in changing coulors.
Well know as a honeymoon destination, Niagara is a small town that welcomes about 14million tourists each year although when we visited in early May, it was fairly quiet as the season was just beginning to gear up for another year. Disappointingly, the walk behind the falls was shut as I would have loved to have braved this although; Im not so sure Id have plucked up the courage in reality! and also, The Maid of the Mist, one of the best ways to appreciate the falls, was not in service as we were just a week or so early as it operates from mid May to October. Never the less, I was surprised at how close to the falls you can actually get as we walked right up so that we were above the falls watching the incredible volumes of thundering water fall away beneath us.
Sometimes, when youve wanted to experience something for a while, finally doing so can be a disappointment as it could never live up to expectations...certainly not the case...a very humbling experience...
