This was my local market when I lived in New York a few years ago although admittedly I didn't visit that often as it was rather on the expensive side. However, it has to be said that if you are a food lover, this place is an Aladdin's cave for gourmet food. The market is located on the site of an old Nabisco factory and is New Yorks largest food mall where you will find both raw and ready made produce. There are just over 20 specialty shops to eat, drink and purchase delicacies. I would highly recommend a visit to Amy's Bread if its till there. This is a wonderful artisan bakery with large windows through which you can watch the bakers at work. Hale and Hearty make hot tasty soups and is a must visit during New York winters. A visit to the wonderful Chelsea Wine Vault is also recommended anytime.
The market is situated at uptown at 75 and 9th Avenue and is located between 15th and 16th Streets. Like most places ion New York, it is very easy to get to by subway.
