[more]Muncaster Castle is located in the far west and most remote part of Cumbria and has been the home of the Pennington family for 800 years. The Great Hall and Library point to its castle origin but its trappings now are of a stately home. It has many historic furnishings and tapestries and one bedroom is reputed to be haunted. The gardens stretch away to ancient woods and the largest mountains in England. The grounds feature the Owl Centre, which is home to many species of these birds, the Wildfowl Pond, 12th Century Muncaster Church and the MeadowVole Maze. The castle plays hosts to many events and festivals through the year. Creeping Kate's Kitchen serves snacks and meals and the gift shop is in The Carriage House.
