[20/02/2007] This author rates the Black Canyon of the Gunnison as five stars, stating that the canyon is "quite spectacular", particularly when going around a corner and one gets to see "the earth open underneath you". He describes the view from the top as "spectacular" and states that, based on all his experience in hiking and camping, he would rate the Black Canyon in his "top 5". He notes, however, that during a hike to the bottom one changes altitude by "2000 feet" in the short span of "1 mile horizontally". He also states that there are only "routes" to the bottom and "no trails".
Edschenk states he would "definitely recommend" the Black Canyon of the Gunnison for those looking for a "challenging hike" as well as for persons "interested in sightseeing". The scenic overlooks were noted as being "well done", with the sides of the canyon consisting of "dark metamorphic pegmatite" which is visible in the various features of the canyon.
