Not For Me, But A Neat Place (18.05.2008)

I get why this place is neat, I really do. I have vegan friends who rant and rave about Aux Vivres, and I'm sure it's all justified. They really have something unique going on that appeals to folks who have a hard time finding good restaurants that suit their lifestyles.

The first day I went here I was with a guy that fits that description. It's his favourite restaurant in Montreal. It took us about an hour to find the place on foot. "This place is so awesome," he kept saying as we walked. I was looking forward to something, whatever it was. I was ready to eat. Eating is great, right?

If you're a vegan or a vegetarian, check this place out. If other reviews I've read online are any indication, a lot of people are wowed by this place. But if you're a vegan and you take your non-vegan friends here for dinner, they might get their food and think that some horrible mistake has been made. Like when there is big slabs of coconut in their sandwich. I don't have the taste buds for that. I'm just saying that it's a possibility.

My "Must-See-Factor" is based on the notion that you have vegan or vegetarian eating habits, or you are interested in experiencing that kind of cuisine. Accessibility is decent, though there are a few steps up into the place and no ramp as far as I can remember.

I thought it was pretty pricey. Everything's organic and local and that adds a lot to the cost, I can appreciate that for sure. I think that the prices are fair for what they're doing if those things are important to the consumer, and I have to stress that that's their target group of patrons. They aren't thinking of me when they're making decisions and that's totally fair. For me, personally, some of the strides they are taking are unnecessary so it felt like I was paying extra for things that I wish they'd skipped. Or paying extra for things that they were doing that made the food less tasty. But again, I have to stress, that's just me.

I also have to mention that I found the service staff a little rude. I got on our waiter's bad side right away when I lit a cigarette on the patio (I thought it was okay since we were outside). I think he kind of singled me out as someone who was going to hate the coconut sandwich. Fair enough, eh?

I love it - that's very funny. And as someone who would probably like this place, I can still respect why you might not.
