The author suggests the Four Seasons might be "the most dangerous hotel location on earth" for reformed shoppers, located as it is amongst the city's designer couture shops that attract models, agents and others who want a little of the glamour to rub off on them. However he reminds us that Milan is a "tough, gritty, industrial city" which is not "very pretty". He quotes a New York Times critic who described Milan as "so grey it makes me want to take it to a carwash".
