When Alastair Sawdays walked into the "gloomy, cavernous courtyard" he could hardly imagine the "lightness and charm" of the "small, discreet boutique hotel" he found on the second floor of the 18th-century building tucked away "in the heart of Milan". The reception was full of "chic Italians and visitors" and he was taken to his room by "young staff". The rooms have the "individuality and style" you'd expect in a "country-house" hotel and are at odds with the spartan modern image he has of Milan. With the Via Dante pedestrian street just outside the door of this hotel, you'll be within walking distance of many of the cultural and shopping attractions of Milan. Castello Sforzesco, the Duomo cathedral, La Scala or the Quadrilatero d'Oro, Milan is at your feet here. Public transport is within walking distance. There is no particular "sign out the front" of the Antica Locanda dei Mercanti, and you may feel like you're in "a friend's home office" when you get to the reception area.
