, 25/09/2005] When you walk up from the underground the amazing white architecture of Milan's Duomo (cathedral) dominates the vision, and what a magnificent building it is. I'd been told it looked like a wedding cake, but my first impression was that it looked like a mountain and there at the top, on a 108m high spire is the 3900 pieces of gold-leaf Madonnina statue, looking out over the city since 1774. No-one knows who laid the first stone, but it was during the year 1386 that Gain Galeazzo Visconti commissioned the building and it took some time to finish it. Napoleon rolled in to town and ordered
