The author describes the Sant Ambrogio as being "unquestionably Milan's most beautiful church", partly due to its "mosaics from the 4th-9th centuries and a beautifully carved golden altar." The remains of " the Christian martyrs Gervasius and Protasius" as well as those of the Milanese "patron saint, Ambrogio" can be viewed "in the crypt of Sant'Ambrogio". Other sights include the "placards just outside the medieval walls" which describe "the different kinds of torture that took place in a sunken pit here" and which "drew crowds of gleeful onlookers from the Middle Ages right up to the start
