Castle under the sun
Methoni castle is located in the small town of Methoni, we travelled here from Finikounda about 10km away on bicycles. We took the road up from finikounda which was like doing one of the mountain stages of the Tour de France, luckily a nice Greek cafe full of older local men served strong Greek coffee to wake us up for the journey ahead. | Description: | Methoni Castle is located on the edge of the sea. Dating from approximately 1500 and having been occupied by both the Turks and Venetians, the Castle is surrounded by sea on three sides. The northern, land side is protected by a moat and fortified battlements. The entrance gate features Corintian pilasters and is reached by way of a 14 arch stone bridge which spans the moat. Signs around the castle tell you of the history and what each part of the castle was used for. There is a car park and entrance is free. |
