[Juleshobs, 29.04.2008] The Mercure Euro-Centre is fairly central and near to the Vieux Port in Marseille although area is not the best to be had, the price is OK.
  • The rooms at the Mercure are of an average size but disappointingly there are no tea and coffee making facilites here which is typical of a lot of hotels in France. There is a mini bar which carries limited stock of drinks including cold water but the prices as you expect are on the high side. Personally I never use the mini bar in a hotel other than to chill my own drinks bought normally in a local supermarket.

Rooms have always been clean every time I have stayed here and there have been quite a few stays for business reasons over the last few years.

Features - not a lot - TV with mainly European channels with only Eurosport the main English travel and lets be honest not the best channel in the world.

Beds - normall I have had a double and these are standard size and very comforatble, not a single distrubed night or back ache the next day due to the matress being way too hard, though I have to add that the matress is not too soft either.

Cannot comment re room service as I have never used this facility but my colleagues have in the past and never had any problems. Food always on time and exactly what they ordered.

    Lobby Atmosphere
  • Gernarl appearance from the outside the hotel fits nicely to the adjacent shopping centre and there is direct access from the lobby during the day. In the evening you have to actually exit the hotel and use the main shopping centre entract though this is no trouble really.

The main lobby is nicely decorated with ample seating if you are waiting for a colleagure or a taxi and has a nice relaxed atmosphere.

The main reception is always manned and I have always found the staff extremely helpful and you are checked in very quickly without hastle. Normally you are required as with most hotels to give your credit card details that you will be paying with upon arrival or you can pay cash. If paying cash it is worth noting that a deposit is required which is above the room rate and the difference refunded upon departure, deductions made for bar, breakfast, room etc that you have added to your bill during your stay.

Other guests in the hotel tend to be of a wide variety with many nationalities being present from business travellers to tourists, the tourists can be a bit noisy late at night but as a sound sleeper this has not been an issue for me.

There are two lifts from the main lobby which give access to all floors.

The hotel bar is placed at the back of the lobby and not large by any means and there can occasionally be a language problem as not all staff speak excellent English but usually we get there in the end. Bar snacks are sometimes brought to your table consisiting of olives, nuts and japanese rice snacks but not always, maybe this is dependant on the time of day. Prices are of standard you would expect in any hotel.

There are no spa or childcare facilities available here.

    Food Quality
  • The bar in this hotel is well stocked with a good variety available to suit most tastes whether alcoholic or not.

For food normally I only have breakfast in the hotel and the is a good variety available from cereals to continental with a good range of breads, cheese, cold meats, jams, juice and fruit. You can also order a hot 'English' breakfast if you require, tea and coffee are served when you arrive for breakfast and your room number taken but everything else is self service buffet style. The overall quality is reasonable not five star but more than good enough.

The restaurant is more of a cafe style seating arrangement and there is a full evening meal available with the menu posted between the lifts and the main entrance to the restaurant.

    Transportation Connection
  • Marseille as a city has beautiful surrounding, however, the location of the Mercure does not offer any views of these and is not situated in the most affluent area of the city. You are just a short walk away from the Vieux Port where there are many restaurants and a good Irish pub called Shamrocks, I would warn to take care when walking around Marseille on your own as it is not the safest city to be in.

The hotel is located fairly near to a metro station for those of you brave enough to use this and you will need change to use the ticket machines, beware the entrances to most stations do have beggers looking for your day rider ticket when you have finished with it.

Marseille is full of great architecture and has a wonderful cultural heritage being the second oldest city in France and has many museums inclulding, transport, art and a museum showing you what life was like in Marseille over the last couple of centuries.

I wouldn't describe the location as quite but its not noisey either just falls somewhere in between the two.
