The reviewer begins and ends his article by comparing Le Panier to the secret heart of an "ageing courtesan": an area which shows the real origins and "no cosmetic can mask". He describes its history. It was the site of the marketplace next to the port when Marseille was founded more than two centuries ago by Greek traders.
