Combing the Beach and Tropical Reef at Maragogi AL (05.05.2008)

The beach and reef at Maragogi Alagoas extends for 22 kilometers. It is part of what is known as the Brazilian Coral Coast. After getting to know most of the 130 kilometers of beaches and reefs of the region, I find the Maragogi beach the best all round. Not only is the lengthy beach very accessible, though at times deserted, it is distinguished by its very wide lagoon that extends all along its hard packed sands. Overall, my most spectacular memories of this beach are at sunrise; each time seems to be so different and powerful.
Too many tourists never see this beach. They come off buses on day excursions and board large catamarans to see the tropical pools at what is called the Galés. If they would look to their right and left, they would realize that the beach, lagoon and reef are a single echo system waiting to be explored. It is just a matter of scheduling a few days to see this beach and its reef. Maragogi has a good infrastructure with great variety of Hotels, Inns and Guest Houses as well as a lively downtown water front.
The beach winds both to the south and to the north of Maragogis waterfront. But, the best part is north from the city center. The water is clearer and there are areas that are mostly deserted. Except for the very few points inhabited by fishermen and their families, or where small streams flow into the sea, the beach is one long, hard packed clean walking path. It is perfect for strolling and shelling. The ever changing views and colors of the lagoon depending on the tide, time of day and the cloud cover make each day an experience different from the last.
If you are lucky, you will be able to visit at the full or the new moon, when the tides are at their lowest. Then, at the area known as the Croa of São Bento or the points known by locals as Antunes and Xareu, it is possible to walk two or three kilometers out to the reef with water just above your ankles. Anyone has the chance to go reef combing and visit its transparent tropical pools with just the precaution of wearing some protective footwear, such as tennis shoes.
When you walk on the beach, try to keep away from populated areas such as those around Peroba and Barra Grande or São Bento. I find the beach in these areas too crowded. But, Burgalhão, just to the north of the waterfront, and the afore mentioned Antunes and Xaréu points are certainly the most untouched part of the beach. If you do not want to walk all the way, try the little microbuses or combies that run up and down the paved road on the outskirts of the city center. They will be able to drop you off at the right spots by just telling them the name of that area of the beach you want to see. They are very inexpensive so bring loose change!
Brazil is filled with great beaches, but few have the combination of reefs, lagoon and kilometers of pristine sands as Maragogi. The beach is conveniently located equidistant from Recife Pernambuco and Maceio Alagoas. Come take a dip.

I am really enamered with this beach and all it offers. It is not so out of the way and can be easily explored.
